RINGSTEKEN

"Ringsteken" is a famous tradition that originated in the Middle Ages and that is still being performed in some places, like in Zeeland (the South of Holland).

It is a game where the participant must try to put his lance through a hanging ring, while sitting on a horse that goes in galop. According to the Zeeuwse tradition the participants should be farmers from the region. They start the contest with a ring that has a section of 38mm. Eventually they make it smaller and smaller, till there is only one person left that is able to stick his lance through the ring. To celebrate him the other participants throw him in the air, for about 6 times haha.

It is an intriguing tradition and I was lucky enough to accidently bump into it while having a little vacation on Zeeland. I couldn't help to take a few pictures..
